Ample Sample Design Contest

This story is all "concept to completion" with few graphic artifacts to show. In February 2007 I conceived of a design contest to create more brand-building buzz about Tricycle. Ample Sample 2007 challenged 4000 designers to "Rethink. Reuse. Upcycle" by repurposing carpet samples - after their usefulness to a design project - to make a design product. We received entries from as far away as Tel Aviv. Ten finalists were chosen and exhibited at NeoCon 2007. The plans for these designs are available on a web site for download today.

We sought key sponsors based on potential longterm partnerships: Floor Focus because they are the leading carpet manufacturing trade publication and Bentley Prince Street because they, widely seen as the design-centric arm of the Interface group, combine the priorities of stringent environmental stewardship with a commitment to high design. We're going to do it again — just do a cursory blog search to read the buzz or pick up a September 1, 2007 issue of the Financial Times of London. Visit www.amplesample.net to see last year's finalists and winners or to enter for this year's contest.
